At the 2025 US Trail Running Conference, Terry Chiplin invited Trailspect’s founder to stand before the full assembly and promise to deliver a digital community product for race directors.
Terry created both the conference and its race director mentorship program, building places where people responsible for races could learn from one another. The conference also provided part of the original inspiration for Trailspect.
The Race Directors Space fulfills the promise made to that community. It is not an official extension of the US Trail Running Conference or its mentorship program. It carries that commitment forward and makes the opportunity to connect available to race directors everywhere.
The work behind the race
Race directing brings together permits, land managers, course planning, volunteers, vendors, medical and safety systems, communications, community relationships, participant needs, and decisions that most people attending an event never see.
Experienced race directors carry judgment and institutional knowledge earned through years of planning, adapting, solving problems, and accepting responsibility when circumstances change. Newer race directors bring important questions, developing experience, new approaches, and the future of the work.
Both belong here.
Race directors understand the substance of directing events. Trailspect provides the structure through which that knowledge can move between people, remain available over time, connect mentors and mentees, and support relationships between conferences, events, and seasons.
Race Director Exchange
Race Director Exchange is the main working Zone inside the Race Directors Space.
It is the place for mentorship, practical questions, shared experience, emerging ideas, cross-cutting problems, and subjects that do not yet have a clearer home. Race directors can use it to compare approaches, seek perspective from experienced peers, share lessons, identify useful resources, and preserve knowledge that should not have to be rediscovered by every new event team.
Race Director Exchange can support discussion about:

lessons learned through experience;

responsibilities that are difficult to transfer to another director or team;

mentorship needs and opportunities;

recurring problems that consume unnecessary time or attention;

templates, examples, checklists, and practices worth preserving;

relationships with land managers, volunteers, participants, vendors, and community partners;

event continuity, succession, and institutional memory;
-
subjects that may eventually deserve their own dedicated Zone; and
-
ways Outpost could make race-director communication and collaboration more useful.
More focused operational work may belong in Operations & Logistics or Safety & Risk Management. Race Director Exchange remains the common gathering place where race directors can raise broader questions, connect related subjects, and help shape what this community becomes.
A structure shaped by race directors
The current Zones are starting points, not a permanent taxonomy.
The race director community will determine which subjects deserve sustained attention, which information should be preserved, which questions require deeper discussion, and which forms of mentorship, reference material, or collaboration would be most useful.
A recurring body of valuable Discussion may become a dedicated Zone. An anticipated subject may remain in Race Director Exchange if the community does not need a separate home for it. Trailspect will maintain the tools, structure, continuity, and communication systems. The people doing the work will shape the substance and direction.
The goal is not to establish one correct way to direct every race. Events differ in size, terrain, distance, organizational structure, community relationships, participant needs, and land-manager requirements. Useful exchange makes those differences clear while allowing race directors to learn from the responsibilities they share.
Candid discussion with appropriate care
Some race-director questions are difficult to examine in full public view. Operational failures, safety concerns, difficult decisions, sensitive relationships, close calls, and unfinished ideas may benefit from discussion among people who understand the work.
For that reason, substantive working Zones are restricted to recognized race directors, other authorized participants, and staff. The public parent Space allows the broader Outpost community to understand the purpose and history of the work without making every working Discussion publicly visible.
Restricted access is not a promise of privacy or confidentiality. Members remain responsible for protecting personal information, privileged communications, confidential business information, protected medical information, sensitive incident details, nonpublic land-manager information, and anything they are not authorized to share.
Peer exchange can help race directors identify questions, compare approaches, and understand possible options. It does not replace legal, medical, insurance, financial, emergency-management, or land-management guidance.
Carrying the promise forward
This Space begins with mentorship, practical exchange, connection, and the preservation of hard-earned knowledge. Its future should be determined by the race directors who use it.
A promise created the opportunity. Race Director Exchange gives the people doing the work a place to build it together.
