Joining a new online community can feel like arriving at a trailhead without a map.

Outpost is designed to help people understand places, find communities, support outdoor work, and make real-world connections.

A few principles will help you get oriented and contribute something worth finding again.

## **Discussions are built to last**

Outpost is not a stream of messages that disappears as soon as the conversation moves on. Discussions create a lasting, searchable record of questions, answers, local knowledge, experience, and community decisions.

An answer shared today may help someone with the same question months or years from now. Before starting a new Discussion, search Outpost to see whether the subject already has a useful home. Continuing an existing Discussion often makes the accumulated knowledge easier for everyone to find.

Public Discussions may also be discoverable through search engines. Write with both the people participating now and those who may find the Discussion later in mind.

## **Take your time**

Outpost is not built around instant replies. Read when you have time, respond when you have something useful to add, and allow other people the same freedom.

A thoughtful response is usually more valuable than a fast one. It is fine to return to a Discussion after considering the question, checking a source, or gaining more experience.

## **Put the Discussion in the right place**

Outpost is organized into Spaces and Zones so that useful conversations can develop around particular places, activities, roles, events, organizations, and shared projects.

Choose the most specific Space and Zone that fits the subject.

Use **Land & Community** for place-based knowledge and local outdoor community discussion. Use **Event Atlas** or **Landmark Gatherings** for event-related discussion. Use private club Spaces for internal club matters. Use **Collaboration** for shared work that crosses organizational or geographic boundaries.

Use **Outpost Commons** only when a Discussion genuinely crosses communities and does not have a clearer home elsewhere.

## **Add knowledge, not just activity**

A useful contribution does not need to be long. It should help move the Discussion forward or improve the record for the people who find it later.

Share relevant experience, explain the reasoning behind a recommendation, provide a reliable source when one is available, or ask a question that helps clarify the issue. Avoid posting merely to keep a conversation active.

When details may change, include dates, locations, and sources. Make clear whether something is:

- an official requirement or notice;

- something observed firsthand;

- information received from someone else; or

- a personal preference or recommendation.

When accounts conflict, add clearer geography, timing, sources, and context rather than treating disagreement as a contest.

## **Protect useful boundaries**

Do not move private club information into public Spaces.

Do not expose personal information, private access details, or sensitive places that should not be shared publicly. Keep each discussion connected to the outdoor places, organizations, events, communities, and work that its Space exists to support.

## **Keep commercial speech in the Vendors Tent**

Commercial promotion, solicitation, vendor marketing, and promotional replies belong only in the **Vendors Tent**.

Outside the Vendors Tent, vendors and other members may participate as ordinary members of the community, but they may not use Discussions or replies to market products, services, or business opportunities.

Mentioning a product or provider as part of a genuine experience is not automatically commercial speech. Repeatedly steering people toward a purchase, service, or business relationship is.

## **Correct mistakes openly**

Outdoor information changes, and people make mistakes.

When correcting something, identify the specific detail and provide the date, source, or firsthand context that supports the correction. Update old information when practical rather than leaving a misleading record in place.

A correction should improve the shared record, not embarrass the person who contributed the earlier information.

## **Take the connection outside**

Outpost is most useful when discussion leads to something real: joining a club, attending an event, volunteering, understanding a place better, helping someone make a sound decision, or spending time outside together.

The lasting record matters because it helps people find their way toward those real-world connections.
